Laura Kimpton Art Basel Installation

Three-story hotel façade at the SLS South Beach

“Clearly, “Myths, Words & Fire” is not a typical exhibition, it is an experience. Unlike many hotels in South Beach, the SLS has its own distinct flavor, more rugged and woodsy than the typical neon-and-swimming pool look of Miami hotels, making it a palatable backdrop for Kimpton’s expansive works. From the front door to the edge of the two massive swimming pools, her artworks work their way into the fabric of the hotel’s design. The façade of the hotel itself was transformed into a canvas, with a three story painted wrap that I first thought was part of the area’s famed Art Deco design.”

The Project

We designed and produced multiple elements for Laura Kimpton’s 2015 Art Basel show at the SLS South Beach Hotel.  Sponsored by art collectors Marc Bell and Dave Leder, Laura was able to create an immersive experience that enthralled all of the senses. First and foremost, we were responsible for the three story facade for the SLS South Beach Hotel.  We also collaborated on a custom clothing line, and created one of a kind pieces for Marc’s wife, Jennifer.

The Role

I was the design lead for the elements of this project related to the clothing line and the hotel decor.  I oversaw the installation of the hotel facade and the production of the clothing.

The Design, Hotel Facade

Using hotel provided specs, I created a template for the facade. The artwork was photographed, and digitally edited to create a striking, evocative, and thematically relevant three story mural.

The Printing

The Image was printed on transfer paper on a 64 inch Mimaki.  the transfer paper was then fed through  a rolling heat press with the fire retardant fabric.

Fabric Finishing

Some of the sections required coverage greater than 5 feet wide, the limit of the printer.  Knowing that we would have to sew the long sections of fabric together and that a seamless appearance was paramount, we created a system of hashmarks that allowed the seamstress to sew the pieces together cleanly.  Marks for grommets were also placed at even intervals at the top and bottom of the fabric sections.

Installation

Our team installed the backdrop, and then took it down, handing it off to the foundation for safe keeping.
